MUST #16, 100k Poets For Change Issue

MUST #16 was a special issue, for the 100K Poets For Change events held all around the country on Saturday. This issue was available at the Elyria, Ohio event that a bunch of us attended and featured poems by participants. If you would like a copy of this issue, please send an email to Lynn at lynnalx@gmail.com. There is also a quote by Michael Rothenberg, (Big Bridge) explaining his motivation for encouraging the poetry community to take part. This event was an affirmation of our desire to connect, coalesce, and support one another for the change we seek.

Upcoming MUST Issues

Seeking pieces for new issues of MUST, the printed microzine that started and remains a collaborative effort. The pages are small, so please consider this when you send. The way it works is simple: you send your piece and a mailing address. When the pages are full, we move on to the next issue. You get a copy or two and you can also download and print as many copies as you want to distribute. They are distributed in book stores, at readings, festivals, through cooperative relationships, in laundromats, on the street. Wherever and whenever. MUST is produced by me, Lynn Alexander, but if you are interested in putting together an issue that is really easy to do. Just collect the content and send a doc and we will get together and talk about the look, photos, etc.
I can also send a template in the format of your choice and you can put it together yourself and prep the file. The purpose of MUST is to spread written and visual art wherever we can. It is inexpensive and a quick read, and it is relatively easy to distribute. Check out some files of back issues, and get to it! Send to: lynnalx@gmail.com and mention "MUST" microzine in the subject. Content should fit on 1/8 of a page. Think short. Visual, found text, experimental, poetry, all forms ok. Thanks. -Lynn

MUST Update

I know, I know. I haven't updated the MUST blog in some time, but the little zines are still flying. They go out at book fairs, in mailings, even through cooperative relationships with small presses and zine publishers. I give them away for free- and as you can imagine, this is not easy as they are mailed around the world.
I have been producing these little microzines since 2009, and thousands of free copies have been circulated. I respond to requests regularly, and I am happy to send them out when people ask. Sometimes people ask about donations, and we are going to work on setting up a few ways to do that. Another idea was to have an online version in addition to the downloads, a place to highlight some of the content that appears in MUST pages so contributors can easily share their pieces with friends on the web. That will be in the works as well. I want to say, however- that MUST will remain a printed, free, cooperatively distributed microzine- true to the way that we envisioned it as a group way back. Some of the original producers and distributors are involved, some are doing new things, but we started this little zine together and all are welcome to jump back in if the mood strikes. Please "follow" this blog if you are on blogspot/google. If you would like to be a contributor to a future issue of MUST, please get in touch. ~Lynn Alexander

A lot of you sent pieces in for MUST, which is very cool. Many sent more than one, so you will hear back about future issues. Same for those not mentioned in this post, you might be coming up in another MUST. Remember that microzines are small so ideally the content is about 100 words or so. Lastest Distro Partner: erbacce

A heartfelt thanks to Andrew Taylor and the good folks at erbacce, who will help us in our mission to stuff MUSTs wherever we can get them stuffed. If you aren't familiar with erbacce, make it your business to set aside a few and go check them out. Andrew is a long time supporter of independent presses and he understands the desire to keep one's printed lovelies as autonomous and free-wheeling as possible. He gets the spirit of MUST, what we are about and why we cling to the DIY ethos. When you check out the website, you will find erbacce press to be kindred in this way, allies in nurturing communities of words. Even the word "erbacce", as they explain refers to an Italian word for "weeds", is something many of us can relate to as a metaphor. We know that MUST is a modest, gritty publication being pushed in neighborhoods that covet pristine lawns. But what about a pristine lawn feels natural? Weeds are an expression of nature asserting herself, her wild dominion. We're all just trying to survive without the corporate fertilizers.

MUST #10 and #11 Going To Print Soon!

The Sphere Collective's little microzine "MUST" is back in town and she's looking for some love. For those of you who aren't familiar, MUST is a pocket sized microzine with a genre-clectic mix of content from diverse contributors. Literally THOUSANDS of these zines have gone out all around the world- from across the US to Russia to Europe to Africa. Yes, people in Russia read MUST. And so can you. Just send an address to Lynn Alexander at lynnalx@gmail.com.
Distribution partners welcome. Submit your short microfiction, poetry, images, genre-bending pieces as soon as possible because MUST 10 and 11 will be out by July.

About Issue Editors

MUST has always been a collaborative, community publication to the extent possible- given the challenges of such editing models. While the content has been collaborative, somebody has to respond to and collect submissions and prepare content for the issues.

Lynn Alexander edits most issues of MUST by default in addition to laying them out, producing, and printing them. That said...

Because we prefer a collaborative, non-hierarchical creative approach, we would be happy to have "issue editors" who would be willing to seek out content and develop an issue of MUST on a per issue basis.

Interested editors should get in touch to sign onto an issue number and be added as a contributor to this blog, where editors can post specifics about their issue including contact information.

Once you commit to an issue, your information will be added here. You will have all the time and flexibility you need to put together content for an issue and no production skills are necessary to volunteer. If you are familiar with the production and design aspects, that is fine too but we do not expect the issue editors to actually create the printed issues. If you have not seen a printed version, please request one so you are familiar with the microzine format before soliciting submisions.
